- "Oh you, what is it with you? "- I asked the owner of the apartment at whom I changed the water meters.

- "This is a heated towel rail, don't you know? You understand this better than me. "The client looked at me in bewilderment.

- "No, I know that this is a heated towel rail, I just have never met such a one" - Calmly answered the pensioner.

Before my eyes, there was a pipe curved with the letter P, dark silver in color, suspended from decorative furniture holders.

As I understand it, it was made of technical stainless steel, and as you know, such metal can withstand aggressive action of many liquids, wall thickness allows you to resist well electrochemical corrosion.

Stainless steel - "black" metal with additives (alloying), mainly chromium, more than 13% of the total mass. When adversely affected, such an alloy is covered with a thin film of chromium oxide, which interacts poorly with the environment. Therefore, it does not corrode. The alloy content depends on the application.

Here is an example of my heated towel rail installed in my home, which starts to fall apart after five years.

-"And who made and installed it for you? You can't buy this in a store. " Curiosity overcame me.

- "This is my grandfather, the Kingdom of Heaven, he worked in the 80s and 90s. at the state district power station, (thermal power plant of the station) by the head in the shop. He had a turner, a locksmith under his command. From there he dragged all sorts of pieces of iron, into the garage, and into the garden "- Granny answered.

Now everything fell into place, from where such high-quality processing of parts, transition couplings. From the fortieth diameter to a regular pipe thread of 20 mm.

- "And you don't sell all these pieces of iron that your husband has saved up" - My greedy soul asked.

- "It's too late, as my hubby was gone, so my son endured everything, sold it, but drank it. There is only this reminder left. "- Granny pointed to a silver pipe...

Such a towel will really last a long time and will outlive many brothers made of modern "chinese rice" suture thin metal. And this is due to the fact that pipes at thermal power plants were used with a large wall thickness and in some places worked under enormous pressure. By the way, somehow at work the welded one made himself a semblance of such a dryer, the diameter of the pipes did not coincide with the usual pipe threads. He was pretty tormented by switching to the usual thread for black rolled products.

After completing his work and saying goodbye to the pensioner, he asked the following question: Why is it rare to find plumbing made of high-quality chemical-resistant stainless steel? Will it really cost so much that there is no buyer. I would buy for example. Not sparing some money.

An interesting article why modern half-heated warmers deteriorate: Is your towel dryer grounded? Or why corrosion appears on a new towel.
